I am a wife, mum to two adult sons (the youngest of whom is autistic). Until recently, I have spent 24 years working in special needs education and currently work as a parent support volunteer for our local autism charity. During Covid I wrote a children’s book about a little gnome who struggled to talk about his emotions and this sparked the idea of using my skills to create a range of resources designed to support children’s social emotional development. These are currently being used by parents, schools and play therapists. In October 2022 I was lucky enough to win a small business award from Theo Paphitis (Dragon’s Den) and this year was a finalist in the Rising Star Category, winning a Highly Commended Award from We Are The City (women in business). Emotions Stones These fun, hand-painted stones contain 18 emotions and 2 characters. While children are learning about different emotions, they can also use the characters to role-play. Role-playing can be very much child-led; when they are using their imagination, they are also improving their language skills and maybe opening up their own feelings, when they may have encountered a difficult situation. By putting these into words can also reduce the severity of some of their feelings, leading to healthy social and emotional development.
